Ronald McDonald House is not just a house to us—

It’s our home away from home.

In December 2021, doctors diagnosed my 12-year-old daughter Maddie Grace with a brain tumor. As a parent, you never want to hear the words “chemo treatments” when it comes to your child. Days after our family celebrated Christmas, my little girl, who had just unwrapped presents, underwent brain surgery to remove the mass.

Post-surgery, doctors said Maddie Grace would need 42 rounds of chemo with MRIs every three months. This meant weekly 4-hour round-trip drives to her treatments in Louisville. We never expected to be on this exhausting journey – no one does. As a single mom of three, I didn’t think I could do it. We were stuck in a nightmare, and I only wanted to focus on helping my little girl fight. Then we found the Ronald McDonald House.

Having a normal life with this schedule is hard,
but RMHCK has made it easier.

Over the past year, RMHCK has become our home away from home. When Maddie Grace and I are in Louisville for her treatment, my 3-year-old and 8-year-old are home with babysitters. Our family is apart, but this home gives us the strength we need every week. When we walk through the doors, we know the staff and volunteers are rooting for us. There’s so much hope in the House. I’ve seen how RMHCK brings families together, keeping smiles on the faces of children and their parents.

We’ve been blessed to make friends at the House. We don’t have to worry about food or toiletries. Instead, we can rest and recharge before Maddie’s treatment the next day. Without this refuge during the hardest parts of her care, we’d have a lot of added financial, mental, and physical stress. We never know how Maddie Grace will feel after treatment each week, but we know we can rely on one thing – Ronald McDonald House. We could not survive without it.

Maddie Grace is doing amazingly well. She’s staying healthy for the most part, other than some short-term memory loss. As of now, she has a few more rounds of chemo. Maddie Grace knows she’s going to beat this. She has the best team of people supporting her, including at the Ronald McDonald House.

Thanks to generous friends like you, families like ours can focus on our children’s needs while far from home. I hope you’ll find it in your heart to continue to support RMHCK and families like ours, who rely on it so much. Your thoughtful gift today means everything.
