A Typical Day?

When giving ideas of what to write their blog posts about, I told the staff they could talk about a typical day in their job – knowing from experience that there is no such thing at our Ronald McDonald House.

My day at the house starts at 3:00PM. The first few minutes consist of the shift changeover, where I’ll find out about anything that’s going on in the house, check ins, and possible check outs left for the day. A little later in the afternoon, when the Adopt a Meal group begins to arrive, I will get the group started in the kitchen, where they’ll prepare dinner for all of the families staying at our Ronald McDonald House. Some days I will check rooms of families that have checked out that day to make sure the room is ready for the next family and finish up the laundry (linens) from families that have checked out that day. I help afternoon and evening volunteers prioritize tasks at hand. The part of my job that I do most and that typically consumes the most of my time at RMH is checking in new families. This is also my favorite part of the job. The number of check ins varies from day to day, ranging anywhere from just a couple to eight or nine. My day(or night) at the house ends at 11:00PM.

My job requires almost constant interaction with families who are staying at our Ronald McDonald House, whether it be checking a new family in, checking out a family, or just helping with whatever other things a family may need. There is really no such thing as a typical day for me as the house’s evening manger, however those are a few things that will happen fairly regularly and consistently. Although every day is different and I never really know what to expect when I arrive for the day, I wouldn’t change it. The dissimilarity of every day keeps me on my toes!
